The Perfect Murder
by Aleksandar Janjic
(I mean, the STORY is "by A. Janjic", not the murder)
Inspector Johnson lit his cigarette. The dead corpse (living corpses also exist, but they are commonly used as a metaphor) wasn't an extremely pleasant view, but he was experienced enough not to be bothered too much. He solved over zero cases just like this one.
But there was something that disturbed him a
bit. Everything was too... obvious. As if the killer had left his
signatures all over the place on purpose. As if he had wanted to
be caught. Either that... or Douglas Douglason had been framed.
Johnson overviewed the complete evidence material again:
-
Very strong poison called Cyprofloxacine was found in the body
and the only place in the town you could find this poison was the
Horror Pharmacy. The manager told him that the last and only
buyer in last hundred years was Douglason.
-
The body had been cut in two with a Stihl chainsaw. From the
workers at Stihl's shop he discovered that Douglas Douglason had
bought one of the best models the day before (the same model that
was lying next to the corpse).
-
Douglason's credit card was found next to the body.
-
There was a bullet (calibre 31.423 mm) in victim's forehead, and
the only person who was using that calibre was Niklas Niklasson,
the local assassin. Niklasson claimed that Douglason had hired
him. Furthermore, Niklasson's payment is always 523624$ and 5
cents per murder. Douglas Douglason took exactly 523624$ and 5
cents from his bank the day before.
-
This wasn't exactly the evidence by itself, but was causing
suspicion: In the dead guy's pocket histestament was found.
Quote: «In case of my death I leave my 500 billion $ to my only
friend Douglas Douglason. As I'm pretty healthy, the only way he
can get the money soon is that someone kills me.
-
On the sidewalk, next to the body, there was found an
inscription, obviously carved by the dying man with his
fingernails, using all strength he could find in his dying
moment: «I was killed by Douglas Douglason!»
-
The victim's neck was broken and Douglas Douglason's fingerprints
were found on it.
-
The dead man (his name was Douglas Mayer, by the way) was holding
a tape in his hand. The tape contained last night's conversation
between him and Douglason. The last thing heard on the tape was
Douglason's voice saying: «I will kill you tomorrow!»
-
Next to the body there was found a photo shot by some Japanese
tourist. The photo was clearly showing Douglason killing Mayer.
-
CNN broadcasted a half-hour footage of the murder. It clearly
showed that Douglason was the murderer. CNN's team was working on
a story several blocks away and had accidentally found themselves
on the crime scene, so they took the opportunity to record
everything.
-
That day the monthly bestselling books list appeared. The first
place was taken by Douglas Douglason's book called «Why I have
to kill Douglas Mayer» with 500 million copies sold.
-
Many copies of the book called «How to kill Douglas Mayer» were
found in Douglason's house.
-
Many witnesses claimed that shortly after time the murder was
committed Douglas Douglason was seen running through the town
happily and shouting «Oh, I am so happy for killing Douglas
Mayer!»
-
And finally, right at that moment, Douglas Douglason was standing
near inspector Johnson and shouting «Hey, bastard, I killed
Mayer! I, Douglas Douglason! Do you hear me? It was me, nobody
else!»
The defense
attorneys had hard time refuting the evidence. So they tried to
prove that the murder was committed in the affect, that
Douglason's mind was not clear at the moment. But they ran into
problems even there: In Douglason's house there were found five
hundred pages of a manuscript written clearly by Douglason,
titled «Ten years of planning and arranging the murder of
Douglas Mayer». There you go.
